ANITA DONGRE

Courage, Ambition & Talent is what makes a person successful and empowered. From the beginning, Men’s got the chance to follow & showcase them, but for women’s courage also needed to follow them. Women’s who followed them are praised and are role models to many. One of such is Mrs. Anita Dongre.

Anita Dongre (born October 3, 1963) is an Indian Fashion Designer. She was born & raised in Bandra, Mumbai (India). She started designing & supplying Indian wear for 12 years to almost all the famous boutiques in Mumbai. After completing the fashion designing course from SNDT Women’s University in Mumbai. Realizing that fashion conscious Indian went abroad to buy western wear, she traveled abroad and had seen the changing trends and a seed of an idea Of starting her own label was born. Thus, she launched her 1st label ‘AND’ at a 300 sq. feet shop in Mumbai’s first mall, crossroads. Now her designs are available under four district brands, which are AND (western wear), Global Desi (ethnic wear), House Of Anita Dongre (bridal, couture pret, menswear) & Anita Dongre Grassroot (organic clothes). Along with couture brands she launched her jewelry brand- Anita Dongre Pink city, which also features under House Of Anita Dongre. She is a vegan and a member of People for the Ethical Treatment Of Animal (PETA).

Empowerment Of Women is a cause close to Dongre’s heart. She supports the women of mijwan village in UP by commissioning ‘Chinkankari’ work from them for her designs. She also contribute to a social organisation run by “Mana Shetty” that provides livelihood to economically backward women with the help of waste material provided by Fashion Designers. She has also set up a training & manufacturing center that helps women develop skills which they can use to earn a living thus empowering them in society.

Anita Dongre’s advice to young aspiring Fashion designers is that ‘I think today is a very special time for women in India because we are finally have fought for living life on our own terms. If I have done
it anyone can do it. One can always be career-minded, have a great career and balance family.
